The Royal Oak's dial pattern — Audemars Piguet calls it "Grande Tapisserie" — is a raised checkerboard of tiny pyramid-shaped facets. Genuine 15500ST uses a CNC-machined dial plate: each pyramid is milled out of a solid dial blank, then oxidized to color. This creates a 3D texture you can feel with a fingernail (0.05mm raised).

Cheap rep batches ($50-80 range) print the tapisserie pattern flat onto a colored dial. Under any oblique light angle, it reads as painted-on. Clean factory's 15500 batch ($185-215) uses actual CNC-machined tapisserie — you get the fingernail-feelable texture. This is the single detail that separates a Royal Oak rep worth wearing from one that gets clocked at hand-shake distance.

Clean vs BF vs ZF for AP — factory pros and cons

ZF factory (which made the reference AP Royal Oak reps for 5+ years) stopped shipping AP in February 2026 — the tapisserie machining tooling wore out. The Royal Oak's integrated-bracelet construction means the case + first bracelet link measure as one wrist-hugging shape. Effective case width on wrist is ~43mm despite the 41mm case-body spec.
